Hymn for St. Lawrence

A Hymn for St. Lawrence

Music is used the world over to unite the citizens of a particular country in a single song often known as the national anthem. Regardless of ethnic difference citizens of that country stand to sing enthusiastically or listen attentively to that song which unites the people.

With the annual celebration of St Lawrence fast approaching on 8/9 August of this year I wondered whether it might be interesting to revisit the hymn I wrote last year for this catholic community that bears his name. I found a text from the Benedictines of St Cecilia Abbey, England and set it to fresh music.

Our parish boasts many distinct languages but predominant are English and Spanish.  Having completed the composition of an English setting I set about work on a version in Spanish. This was difficult because the number of syllables is different in each language. Whilst the English text has a regular number of syllables in each verse the Spanish does not. Nevertheless, I am hoping that both language groups will be willing to learn the music.

I am hoping that many of you will visit the website to listen to the recording and learn the music in preparation for our annual celebration. I apologize in advance for my voice being on the recording!

Patronal Hymn Lyrics

Lawrence the deacon spent himself in service, aiding the needy, wealth of earth despising, then as a martyr for the name of Jesus, joyfully triumphed.

Fire’s bitter torment he endured serenely, even to jesting as the flame grew fiercer, nothing could conquer love so bent on teaching joys everlasting.

Welcoming angels bore his happy spirit, swiftly to heaven to be crowned forever, where he would always intercede for sinners, with the Almighty.

Most holy martyr, humbly we implore you, pray for us daily, winning us forgiveness, make us more fervent, by our faith and morals bearing full witness.

Praise to the Father let us sing with gladness, praise to our Savior, God the Son, Incarnate, reigning forever with the Holy Spirit, God, and Creator.

Himno Patronal Letras
