Dear Sisters and Brothers,

In May 2022, Bishop Parkes asked me to return to St. Lawrence for what was initially thought to be a three-month assignment. That turned into nearly three years, for which I am exceedingly grateful. It is uncommon for a priest to return to a parish for a second time, and practically unheard of for a third.

As you might recall, in coming to St. Lawrence I left my position as director of ministry to priests. Last month, that position once again became vacant, and the priests on the bishop’s advisory council have asked me to return to this role. It is a very grace-filled ministry. Our priests minister to thousands, so it’s important that they have someone available to them for spiritual support and pastoral care. Having served in this role before, I know the joy of encouraging our young priests, being available for counsel to our pastors, and caring for our retired priests who have served the people of God for so many years.

When I arrived in 2022, many of you expressed that while you knew I couldn’t stay long, you were glad I was here. St. Lawrence parish is at the core of my priesthood and my heart. I have a deep love for you and the legacy that Msgr. Higgins established here in our community.

In order to assure that the people of St. Lawrence continue to be well cared for, Bishop Parkes is assigning Fr. Chuck Dornquast as pastor of St. Lawrence. Fr. Chuck, who is bilingual, served here as parochial vicar from 2015-2019. He, too, has a great love for all of you and possesses remarkable gifts. Under his leadership and guidance many seminarians are currently in formation to become future priests. He and his team have developed strong programs to help men and women discern God’s call in their lives. Since 2023, he has served as president of the National Council of Vocation Directors, which is notable recognition of his enthusiasm and vision for the future of the Church. Most of you will remember him and be comforted that someone with such great passion for this parish will be coming to serve as pastor.

To continue the vital work of vocation discernment and support, Bishop Parkes has asked Fr. Xavy Castro to succeed Fr. Chuck as the new vocation director for the diocese. You can all attest to Father Xavy’s amazing ability to connect with people of all ages. His deep spirituality and love of Jesus and his priesthood are particularly inspiring to young people.

On July 1, when all these changes take place, St. Lawrence will receive another priest as parochial vicar to fill Fr. Xavy’s position. This assignment will be announced shortly after Easter along with all the other assignments in the diocese. I know it will take time to adjust to these changes in leadership, and both Fr. Xavy and I are seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we navigate these transitions as well. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions, comments or thoughts you may have.

Recently, I have been reflecting on the numerous instances in the bible where God’s people received unexpected calls and embraced new directions in their lives. Each time they did, they discovered profound blessings and God’s boundless generosity. As we are receiving this together, may we continue to pray for each other and for our cherished community of St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,

En mayo de 2022, el Obispo Parkes me pidió regresar a St. Lawrence para lo que inicialmente se pensó que sería una asignación de tres meses. Eso se convirtió en casi tres años, por lo cual estoy inmensamente agradecido. No es común que un sacerdote regrese a una parroquia por segunda vez, y es prácticamente inaudito que lo haga por tercera vez.

Como recordarán, al venir a St. Lawrence dejé mi posición como director del ministerio para sacerdotes. El mes pasado, ese puesto quedó nuevamente vacante, y los sacerdotes del consejo asesor del obispo me han pedido que regrese a este rol. Es un ministerio lleno de gracia. Nuestros sacerdotes atienden a miles de personas, por lo que es importante que tengan a alguien disponible para brindarles apoyo espiritual y cuidado pastoral. Habiendo servido en este rol anteriormente, conozco la alegría de animar a nuestros sacerdotes jóvenes, estar disponible para aconsejar a nuestros párrocos y cuidar a nuestros sacerdotes jubilados que han servido al pueblo de Dios durante tantos años.

Cuando llegué en 2022, muchos de ustedes expresaron que, aunque sabían que no podría quedarme mucho tiempo, estaban contentos de que estuviera aquí. La parroquia de St. Lawrence está en el centro de mi sacerdocio y de mi corazón. Tengo un profundo amor por ustedes y por el legado que Monseñor Higgins estableció en nuestra comunidad.

Para asegurar que el pueblo de St. Lawrence siga siendo bien atendido, el Obispo Parkes ha asignado al Padre Chuck Dornquast como párroco de St. Lawrence. El Padre Chuck, quien es bilingüe, sirvió aquí como vicario parroquial de 2015 a 2019. Él también siente un gran amor por todos ustedes y posee dones notables. Bajo su liderazgo y guía, muchos seminaristas están actualmente en formación para convertirse en futuros sacerdotes. Él y su equipo han desarrollado sólidos programas para ayudar a hombres y mujeres a discernir el llamado de Dios en sus vidas. Para continuar con el importante trabajo de discernimiento vocacional y apoyo, el Obispo Parkes ha pedido al Padre Xavy Castro que suceda al Padre Chuck como el nuevo director de vocaciones de la diócesis. Todos ustedes pueden dar testimonio de la increíble capacidad del Padre Xavy para conectar con personas de todas las edades. Su profunda espiritualidad y amor por Jesús y por su sacerdocio que ha sido particularmente inspiradores para los jóvenes.

El 1 de julio, cuando estos cambios entren en vigor, St. Lawrence recibirá a otro sacerdote como vicario parroquial para ocupar el lugar del Padre Xavy. Esta asignación se anunciará poco después de Pascua, junto con todas las demás asignaciones en la diócesis.

Recientemente, he estado reflexionando sobre las numerosas ocasiones en la Biblia en las que el pueblo de Dios recibió llamados inesperados y abrazó nuevas direcciones en sus vidas. Cada vez que lo hicieron, descubrieron bendiciones profundas y la generosidad infinita de Dios. Al recibir juntos estos cambios, sigamos orando los unos por los otros y por nuestra querida comunidad de la Iglesia Católica de St. Lawrence.
